Shipping Outlook

Over the past few weeks, shipping conditions have become noticeably tighter across several key trade lanes. While demand appears to be improving in some markets, ongoing scheduling disruptions and carrier capacity management continue to influence how much space is actually available.

For Western Australia importers, space from China has been noticeably tighter since late May. Several major ports are experiencing capacity constraints, with available sailings filling quickly and booking lead times continuing to extend. In many cases, securing space now requires at least two weeks' notice, while three weeks is becoming the safer bet to keep shipments moving as planned.

The broader container market is also showing signs of strengthening. The Drewry World Container Index rose again this week, marking its fourth consecutive weekly increase. Drewry attributes the gains largely to higher rates on Asia-Europe and Transpacific trade routes, although we've also seen tighter space and rising spot rates on some China-Australia services.

Across the Tasman, space between China and New Zealand also appears to be tightening, with reports of overbooked vessels and cargo being rolled from sailing to sailing. While this isn't unusual, it has attracted some attention given the time of year. The question remains whether volumes are increasing or whether scheduling disruptions are reducing effective capacity. We believe that scheduling issues are playing a significant role, but the port statistics in the coming months should tell the story.

Europe continues to face schedule reliability challenges, with carriers reporting port omissions across a number of services. When a port is skipped, containers are often left behind and delayed until a later sailing. The impact can quickly spread beyond a single voyage, affecting schedules across multiple weeks and adding further delays to already lengthy transit times.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains firmly on the industry's watchlist. Tensions have escalated again in recent weeks, and while there has been no major impact on shipping services so far, uncertainty continues to hang over carriers, shippers and energy markets alike.

The market isn't feeling chaotic, but it is certainly feeling tighter. Space is becoming harder to secure on some routes, schedules remain less reliable than many would like, and forward planning is once again becoming one of the most effective ways to avoid supply chain headaches.
