The container shipping market has become noticeably more challenging over the past fortnight, with freight rates increasing sharply across multiple trade lanes and congestion continuing to spread through parts of Asia and beyond.

For cargo moving from North East Asia, South East Asia and the Indian Subcontinent, carriers have announced a combination of upcoming rate increases and peak season surcharges as demand remains strong and available capacity comes under pressure. That being said, the latest fortnightly increase in freight rates has been significant, with many importers now facing considerably higher costs than those seen only a few weeks ago.

This jump reflects a combination of earlier peak season demand, ongoing congestion, equipment imbalances and rising operating costs. While nobody is suggesting we are returning to the extraordinary conditions seen during the pandemic, the market is certainly moving in a firmer direction than many expected this early in the year.

While demand is playing a role, congestion is also becoming an increasingly important factor. Shanghai and Ningbo continue to experience operational pressures, while Singapore's position as one of the world's largest transhipment hubs means delays there can quickly ripple through multiple trade lanes. As vessels wait for berthing windows or arrive behind schedule, carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain reliable service schedules.

The effects are not limited to Asia. Services connecting with Europe and the United States are also experiencing delays, with carriers reporting schedule disruptions and reduced reliability across a number of trade lanes. The result is a market where transit times are becoming less predictable and forward planning is becoming increasingly important.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains firmly on the industry's watchlist. President Trump announced over the weekend that an interim agreement to reopen the waterway was expected to be signed, although Iranian officials have since disputed aspects of the proposal. For now uncertainty remains in the region. Given the Strait's importance to global energy markets, developments there continue to have the potential to influence fuel costs, carrier operating expenses and ultimately freight pricing.

For importers (and exporters), the market is becoming increasingly difficult to predict. Freight rates are moving higher, congestion is spreading through key ports and transhipment hubs, and schedule reliability continues to come under pressure across several major trade lanes.
