Shipping Outlook

Over the past few weeks, the shipping market has started to feel noticeably more active again, particularly on the China to Australia trade lanes. After a quieter patch through April, cargo volumes have picked up heading into late May, and that increase is beginning to place more pressure on vessel schedules and available space.

The strongest demand is still sitting on the East Coast, especially across retail stock, e-commerce products, machinery and construction-related cargo, but Western Australia is starting to see the ripple effects as well. Even where demand into Fremantle is more moderate, reduced carrier capacity across the wider network is making the market feel tighter overall.

One of the more interesting shifts at the moment is how shipping lines are managing their services. Rather than flooding the market with additional space, carriers seem far more focused on controlling capacity and maintaining fuller vessels. In practical terms, that means there is less room for last-minute bookings and less flexibility when schedules change.

Transhipment cargo into Western Australia is also feeling the impact of ongoing congestion through Singapore. The delays are not severe across every service, but there is less buffer in the system at the moment, so even minor disruptions are having a greater knock on effect to connecting vessels and arrival timing into Fremantle.

Globally, the industry continues to operate against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, particularly around the Red Sea and Middle East region. While supply chains have adjusted significantly over recent months, the situation is still influencing shipping networks, operational planning and carrier decision making behind the scenes.

Airfreight markets, on the other hand, have become a little calmer after the sharp volatility seen earlier in the year. Conditions remain firm internationally, however pricing and capacity now appear to be settling into a more stable pattern as airlines continue adjusting schedules around ongoing disruptions in parts of Europe and the Middle East.

At the moment, the market does not feel chaotic, but it does feel tighter and more structured than it did earlier in the year. The biggest takeaway for importers is that forward planning is becoming important again, particularly for cargo requiring transhipment connections or moving toward the end of June.
