Shipping Outlook

Over the past fortnight, the container shipping market has continued to be a bit of a mixed bag.

While global freight rates continue to ease, carriers are actively managing capacity through blank sailings, smaller vessels and selective booking restrictions, creating different conditions across trade lanes.

The biggest story continues to be the Middle East. Drone strikes on two gas vessels alongside Egypt's Port of Damietta have raised concerns that attacks on commercial shipping could spread beyond the Red Sea into the Mediterranean. At the same time, reports suggest the Houthis are considering a transit fee for vessels using the Bab el Mandeb Strait. While nothing has been announced officially, the proposal shows that disruption in the region may continue even after the current conflict subsides.

Despite softer global demand, space remains tight on a number of services. Blank sailings and smaller vessels are limiting available capacity, and in some cases creating space shortages that are helping to support higher freight rates.

Services into Fremantle continue to experience tight space, with one shipping line suspending bookings and other carriers requiring bookings to be placed two to three weeks in advance. We've also seen vessel omissions, changes to port rotations and terminal congestion at several Australian ports, resulting in ongoing schedule disruptions.

Although many analysts expect freight rates to continue easing through August, the market remains unpredictable. Geopolitical tensions, capacity management and changing vessel schedules all have the potential to influence rates and transit times at short notice.

For businesses moving freight over the coming weeks, our advice remains the same: plan ahead, book early where possible, and allow extra time for potential schedule changes.
