India is an increasingly important trading partner for Australia, and as Diwali approaches, freight demand is building. For businesses moving cargo between the two countries, now is a good time to review upcoming shipments and plan ahead.
Diwali is one of India’s busiest commercial periods, bringing increased activity across manufacturing, retail and distribution. As demand builds, securing suitable freight space and allowing enough time for transit and customs clearance become increasingly important.
Whether you’re importing products from India or exporting Australian goods, early planning can help you compare options, manage delivery expectations and reduce the risk of last-minute complications.
Don’t overlook the Australia-India Free Trade Agreement
The Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) came into effect in December 2022, creating new opportunities for businesses trading between the two countries.
The agreement provides preferential tariff treatment for eligible goods, with tariffs eliminated or reduced on more than 90% of Australian goods exports to India by value. Imports from India into Australia also benefit from tariff-free access under the agreement.
Not every shipment automatically qualifies. Eligibility depends on the product, its origin and the relevant rules and documentation. It’s worth checking with your customs broker whether your goods qualify before shipping.
Understanding the agreement can help businesses assess potential duty savings and make more informed decisions about their landed costs.
