Fremantle’s new traffic bridge has a name, with the structure set to officially open next weekend as Walyalup Bridge.
Walyalup is the traditional Whadjuk Noongar name for Fremantle, a place of deep cultural, spiritual and historical significance. The name is also linked to walyo, the Noongar word for the woylie, a small kangaroo-like marsupial once found in the area.
The new bridge will feature two lanes in each direction, wide shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and improved clearance for boats and other river traffic.
Its design also incorporates public art, feature lighting and signage, while retaining original timber piles from the former bridge as a nod to its history.
More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the official opening, marking a new chapter for one of Fremantle’s key river crossings.
After years of construction and traffic changes, it’s almost time to see the new bridge in action .. and get used to calling it Walyalup Bridge.
