The New Fremantle Traffic Bridge Is Opening Early
There is some good news for Fremantle’s freight and transport network, with the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge confirmed to open on 1 November 2026, months ahead of schedule.
The announcement will be particularly welcome for local businesses, commuters and the freight industry, who have had to navigate significant changes to the road network since the old bridge closed on 1 February.
The original plan was for the closure to last for up to 12 months, with the new bridge previously expected to open in the first half of 2027. An innovative construction approach has allowed the project team to fast-track the works and bring the opening forward.
For Fremantle, this is more than simply a new bridge. The crossing is an important connection between the northern and southern sides of the Swan River and plays a significant role in keeping traffic moving around the Fremantle Port precinct.
What will the opening mean for freight?
The reopening should provide some welcome relief for freight transport in Fremantle, particularly as we head into the busy summer and peak season trading period.
Since the old bridge closed, freight operators and other road users have had to work around temporary traffic arrangements and increased pressure on surrounding routes. While the network has continued to operate, the closure has added another layer of planning to already complex freight movements.
Once the new bridge opens, the temporary road network changes introduced ahead of the closure will gradually be removed, including changes affecting access to and from Fremantle via Canning Highway.
For local importers, exporters and businesses moving freight through Fremantle, restoring a more direct and reliable road connection will be a positive development.
Of course, the opening does not mean every impact disappears overnight. Finishing works will continue around the bridge after it opens, including landscaping and the completion of the bridge's feature lighting. However, having the new crossing operational will be a significant step forward for the Fremantle transport network.

The new bridge is also being designed as an important gateway into the city, combining its practical role with a distinctive architectural design reflecting Fremantle’s character and history.
A community celebration will be held on Sunday, 1 November, giving people the opportunity to walk across the new bridge before it opens to traffic later that evening.
