Fremantle Traffic Bridge Project Reaches New Milestones
The new Fremantle Traffic Bridge continues to take shape, with several key construction milestones recently achieved as work progresses on one of Western Australia's most significant infrastructure projects.
According to the latest update from the Swan River Crossings and Main Roads project team, the first concrete deck pour has now been completed, bridge beam installation is nearing completion, and work on the bridge deck is well underway. Installation of the bridge parapets has also commenced and will continue over the coming months.
Progress is also being made on the removal of the old Fremantle Traffic Bridge. The bridge deck, upper piers and abutments have already been removed, with underwater pile removal works currently underway. The complete removal of the old bridge is expected by August 2026.
One of the more innovative aspects of the project is an Australian first environmental initiative being installed beneath the waterline. Newly designed marine reef mats are being used for scour protection around the bridge structure.
Made from recycled oyster shells and eco-engineered surfaces, the reef mats are designed to support native marine life while also providing protection for the bridge infrastructure. Unlike traditional concrete mats, they more closely replicate natural marine conditions, encouraging shellfish settlement and supporting blue carbon sequestration.
The project represents an important investment in Fremantle's transport network while also incorporating sustainability initiatives designed to benefit the Swan River environment.
With major structural works continuing to advance, the new bridge is becoming an increasingly visible feature of the Fremantle landscape.
