What is Westport and why does it matter?

Western Australia is moving ahead with Westport, a long-term plan to develop a new container port in Kwinana, south of Perth, with completion targeted for the late 2030s.

At its simplest, Westport is the State Government’s answer to a growing problem: capacity. Fremantle Port has served as WA’s main container gateway for decades, but it’s expected to reach its limits within the next 10–15 years. While upgrades can stretch that timeline, they won’t solve it long term.

What makes Westport different is that it’s not just a port. It’s being designed as a connected freight system, bringing together a new container terminal in Kwinana with upgraded road and rail links to support how cargo actually moves across the state.

The project has now moved beyond the planning phase and into development, with detailed work underway across marine, road and rail. This stage is less about announcements and more about getting the fundamentals right, refining designs, working through environmental approvals, and making sure the project is viable before construction begins.

For now, Fremantle remains critical and will continue operating at full capacity, with ongoing investment to keep it efficient and safe. But over time, Westport is intended to take over as WA’s primary container gateway, allowing for a more scalable and modern approach to handling freight.

For the industry, it’s something to keep an eye on. While it’s still years away, Westport will ultimately reshape how container freight moves in and out of Western Australia, and the decisions being made now will influence that future.
