Why Is Switzerland the World's Largest Container Shipping Nation?

At first glance, it doesn't make much sense.

Switzerland has no coastline and no seaports, yet it is home to the world's largest operated container shipping fleet.

The explanation is surprisingly simple. These rankings aren't based on where ships sail from or which countries have the busiest ports. Instead, they're based on where the world's major container shipping companies are headquartered.

Switzerland is home to MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the world's largest container shipping line. As a result, Swiss-based carriers operate 971 container vessels with a combined capacity of 7.14 million TEU, making Switzerland the leading container shipping nation.

According to the latest DynaLiners report, using Alphaliner fleet data, the top five carrier nations by operated fleet capacity are:

• Switzerland - 7.14 million TEU

• Denmark - 4.61 million TEU

• China - 4.35 million TEU

• France - 4.14 million TEU

• Taiwan - 3.44 million TEU

Collectively, the world's top 20 carrier nations operate 6,291 container vessels with a combined capacity of 32.68 million TEU, around 84% of the global container fleet.

For importers and exporters, it's an interesting reminder of how global shipping really works. The location of a shipping company's headquarters often has far more significance than the country's geography. Many of the vessels carrying cargo to and from Australia are managed by companies headquartered thousands of kilometres from the ports they serve.

It's one of those industry facts that challenges assumptions and shows just how interconnected global trade has become.
