Australia Announces First Vessel in New Strategic Fleet

The Australian Government has announced the first vessel in its new Strategic Fleet program, marking a significant step towards rebuilding Australia's sovereign maritime capability.

The ANL Kokoda, a 1,740 TEU containership, will become the first vessel in a government-backed fleet designed to provide additional shipping capacity during emergencies, natural disasters and major supply chain disruptions.

The announcement comes at a time when Australia remains heavily reliant on international shipping services, while the number of Australian flagged commercial vessels has declined significantly over recent decades.

Under the Strategic Fleet program, participating vessels will be Australian flagged, Australian crewed and available for government use when required. The long term objective is to establish a fleet of 12 vessels, with the ANL Kokoda forming part of an initial three vessel pilot program.

One interesting aspect of the announcement is the connection to ANL. Originally established by the Australian Government in 1956 as the Australian National Line, ANL later became part of the CMA CGM Group in 1998. Nearly 70 years later, an ANL-operated vessel has become the first ship selected for Australia's new strategic fleet.

The Government estimates that operating the vessel under the Australian flag will cost an additional A$7 million per year. However, supporters of the program argue that the ability to access shipping capacity during times of crisis provides an important national benefit.

Further announcements regarding additional vessels in the pilot program are expected in the coming months as Australia continues its efforts to strengthen maritime resilience and rebuild domestic shipping capability.
