Italy’s Gioia Tauro Port Invests in Capacity and Shore Power
Italy’s Port of Gioia Tauro is continuing to invest in its infrastructure, with new dredging works and a major shore power programme underway.
A €5 million contract has been awarded to complete dredging of the port channel, including the South Turning Basin and Eranova quay. The works will bring these areas to a depth of 17 metres, while the wider channel will remain between 17 and 19 metres deep.
The investment is designed to maintain access for some of the world’s largest container vessels, including ships exceeding 24,000 TEU and more than 400 metres in length.
The port is also moving ahead with the next stage of its shore power programme, with the overall project valued at more than €100 million.
Once completed, Gioia Tauro is expected to have 160 MW of shore power capacity, with nine connections for container vessels and one for Ro-Ro vessels.
For a major Mediterranean container hub, the investment highlights the continued focus on increasing port capability while also reducing emissions from vessels at berth.
Gioia Tauro is an important transhipment hub for cargo moving between Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean, making developments at the port relevant to global shipping networks and businesses moving freight through Europe.
