Ningbo’s Strong Growth Shows Shifting Export Trends in China
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has recorded a strong start to the year, with container throughput rising 14.7% year-on-year to 11.55 million TEU in the first quarter, while total cargo volumes reached 370 million tonnes.
The growth comes at a time when global trade continues to face geopolitical uncertainty, changing supply chain patterns and shifting sourcing strategies.
Bulk commodities including iron ore and crude oil both exceeded 10 million tonnes during the quarter, while vehicle exports surged more than 96% year-on-year through international ro-ro services. The port also reported continued investment in green initiatives, including expanded LNG bunkering infrastructure and new biofuel bunkering services.
Beyond the headline figures, Ningbo’s performance also highlights the growing importance of operational efficiency when businesses are choosing export gateways in China.
Ningbo vs Shanghai
For many importers and exporters, particularly those sourcing from Zhejiang Province and Yiwu, the decision often comes down to Ningbo or Shanghai.
Shanghai remains the world’s largest container port and offers enormous global connectivity, extensive carrier options and strong inland access through the Yangtze River system.
Ningbo, however, continues attracting attention for different reasons.
Its proximity to Yiwu and surrounding manufacturing regions can significantly reduce inland transport costs, while the port is also known for faster turnaround times, reduced congestion and efficient handling during peak shipping periods.
For many exporters, particularly those moving consumer goods and commodities from Zhejiang Province, these operational advantages can translate into meaningful savings and more predictable supply chain performance.
Why It Matters
As supply chains continue evolving, businesses are looking beyond freight rates alone when selecting ports and routing cargo.
Congestion, customs efficiency, inland transport costs and reliability are becoming increasingly important considerations.
While Shanghai continues to dominate in overall scale, Ningbo’s growth demonstrates how efficiency and strategic location are helping reshape export logistics across China.
