Red Imported Fire Ants Detected at Sydney Intermodal Facility
Red imported fire ants have been detected at the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre in Sydney’s inner west, prompting a biosecurity response and renewed calls for vigilance across the freight and logistics industry.
According to an industry alert from Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA), the nest was identified during routine surveillance by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) on 23 September 2026. The nest was subsequently located and treated, with specialist detection dog teams finding no additional nests during follow-up surveillance.
Genetic testing confirmed that the ants did not originate from South East Queensland’s established infestation. Authorities believe they may have entered Australia through an overseas container pathway.
What happens next?
Authorities have established an incident management team, with inspections and treatment planned within a 500-metre radius and broader surveillance across a two-kilometre area.
Businesses handling potential carrier materials, including soil, turf, landscaping products, building materials and vegetation, are expected to be a focus of further engagement.
Although no specific action is currently required for most supply chain participants, the detection highlights the importance of biosecurity vigilance when handling imported containers and cargo.
What should businesses do?
FTA and APSA encourage industry participants to remain alert, ensure staff know what to look for and follow any directions issued by biosecurity authorities.
If red imported fire ants or a suspected nest is identified, the advice is:
Leave it: Do not disturb or attempt to treat the nest.
Snap it: Safely photograph or record the ants.
Call it: Report the sighting to the dedicated hotline on 1800 680 244.
The detection is a reminder of the biosecurity risks associated with international freight movements and the importance of early identification and reporting.
