Westport Container Port Faces Further Delays and Rising Costs

WA’s proposed Westport container port is facing further delays, with construction now expected to begin before 2030 rather than the original target of 2028.

According to The West Australian, the project is competing for construction resources and capacity with the Henderson defence precinct as WA prepares for the infrastructure demands associated with AUKUS.

Costs have also risen significantly, with Westport’s original $4 billion estimate increasing to $7.2 billion. Some observers suggest the final cost could exceed $12 billion.

Planned for Kwinana, Westport is designed to accommodate WA’s future container trade as demand grows.

For the shipping and logistics industry, the project remains an important one to watch. Port capacity, supporting infrastructure and landside connections all play a role in keeping containers moving efficiently through the supply chain.

With both costs and timelines under pressure, questions remain around when Westport will progress to construction and how the project will meet WA’s future freight needs.
