Westport Moves Forward with $1.1 Billion Commitment
The development of Western Australia’s future container port at Kwinana has taken a significant step forward, with the Federal Government formally backing the Westport project through a combined $1.1 billion funding commitment alongside the State Government.
A key focus of this investment is critical landside infrastructure, particularly major upgrades to Anketell Road, which will become a primary freight corridor linking the future port to the wider road network.
The first stage of works will see Anketell Road expanded to four lanes between Leath Road and Abercrombie Road, along with a grade-separated interchange at Rockingham Road. These upgrades are designed to improve freight efficiency, reduce congestion in residential areas, and support safer, faster transport connections into the Kwinana industrial zone.
Beyond improving traffic flow, the project is also expected to deliver broader economic benefits. By strengthening access to the proposed Westport terminal and the surrounding Western Trade Coast, the upgrades will support long-term trade growth, critical minerals supply chains, and defence-related industries, while also helping reduce emissions through more efficient freight movement.
This announcement builds on a wider infrastructure pipeline, including major upgrades to the Kwinana Freeway and ongoing investment in planning and development of the Westport precinct itself.
Positioned as a once-in-a-generation project, Westport is set to play a central role in shaping Western Australia’s future supply chain, unlocking capacity, improving connectivity, and supporting the state’s long-term economic growth.
